This second sardine series relies on the chequered background of gingham cloth. A nice blue, it is a reminder of familiar fabrics found in the kitchen from teatowels to tablecloths. Here I’m chasing colours again for this striking grided background. In the 1970s alot of my fellow artists were doing hard edged paintings with a liberal use of masking tape. A question of process over substance we were all guilty of. So this is my guilt trip, a self indulgant colourful grid with an added tin of sardines. I used beautiful 300gsm archival paper, sometimes smooth sometimes rough.
